Stubborn Pride in The Stone Angel :: essays research papers

In the novel there is mention of the war cry of the Curries, â€Å"Gainsay who dare!† (15). Such a translation may be "Oppose me (us) if you dare to." There is a very predominant theme of stubborn pride in The Stone Angel, which makes the novel sententious to its readers. Pride refers to a strong sense of self-respect, a refusal to be humiliated as well as joy in the accomplishments of oneself or a person, group, or object that one identifies with. Proud comes from late Old English prud, probably from Old French prude "brave, valiant". There are destructive and constructive effects of stubborn pride in that pride is a double-edged sword and separates inclination and response. There is a certain amount of pride that goes along with social status. Jason Currie was a "self-made man" who "had pulled himself up by his bootstraps" (7). Hagar was very proud of her father's success, on account of "he had begun without money" (14). Hagar stated, "Father took such pride in the store - you'd have thought it was the only one on earth. It was the first in Manawaka, so I guess he had due cause† (9). Hagar recounts the Stone Angel as being "my mother's angel that my father bought in pride to mark her bones and proclaim his dynasty†¦" (3). Hagar's father was an extremely proud man, a trait that was inevitably passed on to his daughter, and he took great pride in this "terribly expensive" statue, which "had been brought from Italy" †¦ "and was pure white marble" (3). Hagar calls to mind displaying her pride as young as age 6 when she says, "There was I, strutting the board sidewalk like a pint-sized peacock, resplendent, haughty, hoity-toity, Jason Currie' s black-haired daughter" (6). The Currie's thought very much of themselves, this is shown when Hagar speaks of her father, saying, "Matt and Dan and I always knew he could never have brought himself to marry his housekeeper" (17). All too often though, pride can be the defining trait that leads to the tragic hero's tragic downfall. Excessive pride also materializes itself as arrogance. It interferes with the individual's acceptance of the grace of God, or the worth which God sees in others. As Mr. Troy asks Hagar, â€Å"Don’t you believe, in God’s infinite Mercy?† (120), she replys â€Å"What’s so merciful about Him, I’d like to know?† (120). Hagar had developed such pride in herself that she had even let go of God, or the fact that she needed God.

In general I do support the act of piracy in certain ways. Piracy does not mean it is bad; some may disagree or agree the term piracy is debatable on different perspective. Let’s take an example if we look at piracy in an objective way it is bad, but what if we change it to a subjective perspective? The term piracy is debatable. The topic of piracy is actually quite hypocritical because societies mainly do it even though they know it is illegal. Of course in general our society thinks that piracy is a bad thing, because some resources are license .Take an examples for movies or games, these developers strive hard to produce these entertainment purpose, but by downloading privately it will waste their efforts as their sales of the product decreases. Some people say that piracy is a good thing; its true piracy may be a good thing because it affects our current society on a larger scale no matter in education, entertainment, or any other field. What Google is trying to do here is to reduce the act of piracy, but we all know it is a hard task. The internet itself actually opens up a wide field for piracy; if we want put a stop piracy we might as well ban the usage of internet. Sometimes piracy is a good thing because we know that the internet consist of all source of information by downloading it, people from all around the world can benefit from it. Some society that came from rural areas couldn’t afford the resources, so they have to use an alternative way to acquire them. By doing so the act of piracy could be good. To conclude it we could say that the act of piracy is actually good in some way .In my opinion I think it goes both ways.

For example, Martin Luther, who posted the 95 Theses on the door of Wittenbergs All Saints Church. People were ready for a change because the church was in corruption so they were selling indulgences, a lessening of time a soul would have to spend in purgatory, and practicing simony, the selling of church officials. There were also three popes in the church at one time so they people were confused about who was the right one. The people of the church also could not understand the Bible and when officials spoke to them because they used  Latin, not vernacular, the everyday language of the ordinary people. Nowadays, people continue to turn on an institution or a practice. An example of this is when people go on strike. People do this to protest against something. This is similar to the people of the renaissance because some of them started to follow new reformers as opposed to the church. The scientific revolution of the renaissance period changed the way people viewed the universe. It brought us many advances in science and math. We know have an astronomical telescope because of Galileo Galilei. Today, there are constantly people researching and coming up with new scientific ideas just like people in the renaissance period. However, today we are not having a scientific revolution in just one period of time, people are always creating new technology. In some ways the renaissance period is similar to today. Yet, in other ways it is not, regarding the renaissance in general, the reformation, and the scientific revolution. Today, America is constantly advancing in new ideas, just like what was taking place during the renaissance period. Part V: Extra Credit The religion of my family is not in need for reformation, however, if someone told me that their religion was in need for a reformation, I would tell them what Martin Luther did during the renaissance period. Martin Luther created the 95 Theses, or 95 arguments about the church, against indulgences. Indulgences, back then, was the lessening of the time a soul had to spend in purgatory, a place where souls would wait for forgiveness of their sins before they could go into heaven. Luther argued that indulgences had no basis in the Bible, the pope had no authority to release souls from purgatory, and that Christians could be saved through faith alone. Luther was eventually summoned to the Diet of Worms and was excommunicated when he refused to recant, or give up, his opinions. Even though Martin Luther was excommunicated, he still had many powerful supporters who provided shelter and food for him. If someone were to follow in the path of Luther, one would have to write up everything that is wrong with their religion. They could  use this to know what they want the basis of their new religion to be. If someone were to do this, there would most likely be many people who would oppose it. Yet, there could be people who were thinking the same thing. However, I do not know if I would necessarily tell someone to use Martin Luther as an example because times were different than they are now. Nowadays there are a lot of different religions that anyone has the right to believe in. If someone from the modern day decided that they did not like their religion, all they would have to do is switch to another one or follow their own beliefs.
